About the ICPSR Bibliography

Welcome to the ICPSR Bibliography of Data-related Literature

The ICPSR Bibliography is a searchable database of known published and unpublished works resulting from analyses of data distributed in ICPSR studies.

Freely-available and continually updated, the database currently contains 85,000 citations.

  • Any ICPSR website search will bring back results in the Data-related Publications tab. Those results are pulled directly from the ICPSR Bibliography’s database of study-linked citations to publications. Tips on how to search and browse the ICPSR Bibliography can be found on the ICPSR Bibliography portal page
  • Searching the database allows a variety of users to discover ICPSR data that they may not have known existed, and to read how others used those data. See the Using the ICPSR Bibliography page to learn who can take advantage of this tool.
  • For a description of the types of publications collected in the ICPSR Bibliography, as well as a short explanation of the methodology we currently use to find publications that analyze data, see the document, Bibliography Reference Types & Short Explanation of Search Methodology.
  • We determine if a publication should be included in the ICPSR Bibliography according to our Collection Criteria.
  • Originally developed with support from the National Science Foundation (SES-9977984), work to populate the Bibliography is now funded by the ICPSR Membership and its topical archive sponsors. Go to the ICPSR Bibliography of Data-related Literature: Originating Methodology to learn more about how the collection was created.
  • Read the interview, "Looking Back and Looking Ahead," with former associate director, Mary Vardigan, about how and why the Bibliography was created two decades ago.

What is not in the Bibliography?

Data-related publications are collected as a resource for our data users; the Bibliography is our best attempt to gather all citations relating to ICPSR data, however:

  • This collection is not exhaustive. Many authors continue to omit any citation of the data used in their work and/or neglect to inform ICPSR of their published materials. Therefore, this collection may under-report utilization of ICPSR data and should only be viewed as a partial statement of its impact on research.
  • Not all publications appearing in this collection will use the most recent version of the data. Oftentimes the version is not provided in a publication, or else the version changed after the publication was added to the collection.
  • In the collection, there could be citations to publications that we have judged most likely analyzed data distributed at ICPSR, but we cannot say for sure from the information provided.
  • The collection could contain citations to publications that analyzed data very similar to those at ICPSR, but that were clearly retrieved from a different distributor. Such publications are included in the collection for the purposes of edification.
