Where do you work and what is your position title?

Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities

What is a favorite memory or instance you have working with ICPSR? What makes ICPSR a great place?

Working with John Marcotte and the DSDR team has been so great – our phone calls are always fun and there are lots of stories! It was also awesome when ICPSR Director Maggie Levenstein awarded Wendy and me the Piper Simmons Data Contributor of the Year Award in 2022. We were SO honored and surprised when she told us over a zoom call. It was awesome.

What is the name of one (or more) datasets you've deposited with us?

National Couples' Health and Time Study (NCHAT)

If your dataset were a character in a movie, who would it be and why?

Phew, that is pretty hard. I am not very creative. Maybe it would be a romantic comedy?

What's the most surprising or unexpected thing you learned while collecting/analyzing these data?

Our recent study showing the bisexual women are – on average – either years older biologically than chronologically really surprised me.

If you had to explain this dataset to an 8th grader, how would you describe it?

It is a study of couples in the United States – about how they spend their time, how happy they are, and what their families are like.

What's one thing you wish more people understood about this dataset or the process of creating it?

There are so many cool items and questions that are not typically in population representative surveys.

What do you do when not at work?

I spend time with my family, exercise, read, do puzzles, karaoke, air guitar, and play lots of games

What have you read/viewed/listened to/etc. recently?

I loved the audio book of An Unfinished Love Story by Doris Kearns Goodwin. SO good. I cried four times.

What might surprise us about you?

I have four kids
