Back by popular demand! "Providing Data Services and Support" workshop
The ICPSR Summer Program is delighted to announce the return of the popular summer workshop, "Providing Data Services and Support," featuring new and updated content as well as new instructors!
Providing Data Services and Support: From Surviving to Succeeding
This workshop is offered to library personnel who manage or support data services at their institution. Those who should attend include: those new to providing data services and support; those seeking to revitalize, expand, or formalize existing services; or anyone looking to refresh and expand on previous data-related knowledge.
In addition to deepening knowledge of data services support, this workshop is designed to foster collaboration and networking with fellow data professionals. Sessions will be synchronous and interactive, and emphasize hands-on exercises, group discussions, and peer-peer information sharing. Activities are designed to deepen topical knowledge, showcase the range of data services and support options, and provide attendees with real-world examples in various institutional contexts.
This workshop covers the following data service and support areas: defining and scoping data services, data formats and documentation, common data resources, data reference, licensing and collection development for data, and popular tools and approaches for quantitative and qualitative data analysis. At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees will have gained the skills needed to complete their choice of one of the following capstone projects: drafting a data collection development policy for their institution, completing a data resources scan of their home institution that can be used to discuss data services with various stakeholders, or creating an institutional-specific instructional slide deck to help learners find data and discover relevant resources.
Note: This is not a course in statistical analysis and attendees are not expected to know how to use statistical software.
Structure
This workshop will run mornings (west coast) / afternoons (east coast) Monday - Thursday during July 14 - July 25, 2025. Participants are invited to continue as a community of practice with optional monthly discussion/drop in hours for 3 months following workshop conclusion.
