New Data! First Baby Study (FBS), Pennsylvania, 2009-2014

DSDR is pleased to announce the release of the First Baby Study (FBS), Pennsylvania, 2009-2014 (ICPSR 38778).

The FBS is a prospective cohort study investigating the association between mode of delivery at first childbirth and subsequent fecundity and fertility over the course of a 3-year follow-up period. Enrolled during pregnancy, women ages 18-35 were interviewed by telephone during their third trimester. Follow-up surveys occurred at 1, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months postpartum, with the last interviews conducted in 2014. Participants were recruited from low-income clinics, obstetrician’s offices, ultrasound centers, health fairs, and hospital intranet postings.

Baseline variables include health history, health habits, current pregnancy questions and delivery plans, relationship status, access to healthcare, future birth desires and intentions, and sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Follow-ups ask about health care access and utilization, labor and delivery, health of participant and child(ren), maternal bonding, relationship status and sexual activity, psychosocial factors, and sociodemographic factors.

Each FBS dataset is public use. In the 18, 24, and 30-month interviews, participants were asked the same questions as in the 6 and 12-month interviews as well as questions about any subsequent pregnancies and deliveries, and the health of any new children.
