Where Should I Deposit My Data?

The following questions will help you determine where/how to deposit your data.

  1. Was your data collection funded by one of the following agencies?

ICPSR currently partners with several federal agencies and organizations to provide access to research data. These agencies leverage ICPSR's capacity to curate, preserve, and disseminate data efficiently.

    • Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS)
    • National Institute of Justice (NIJ)
    • Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
    • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)
    • National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
    • National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
    • Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
    • National Institute on Aging (NIA)
Some federal funding agencies require data be deposited with ICPSR to undergo disclosure review and data processing. If your research was funded by any of the agencies listed above, you must deposit your data with ICPSR for full curation. Select your funding agency below.

  2. Are you archiving your data because a journal or a publisher requires the data be available for replication?

Some journals and publishers require data and related documentation, code, programs, etc. be archived so other researchers can replicate research findings in a published article, book, or dissertation.

Replication datasets are a good match for the Deposit Data to openICPSR, our self-publishing archive. openICPSR allows you to publish instantly and obtain a DOI (persistent URL) for citing your data.
  3. How do you want ICPSR to archive your data?

    1. I want ICPSR to curate my data. Data will be reviewed for technical problems, carefully documented, and made available in a variety of formats (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Stata, R, delimited).

      • If the depositor does not pay for curation, the data will be available only to ICPSR members.
      • If the depositor pays for curation, data will be freely available to the general public. Please contact us for a quote on a professional curation package.
      • Data will be added to the ICPSR processing queue.

    2. I want my data to be immediately available, albeit without the review, curation, and preservation by ICPSR staff. Data will be distributed as-is, exactly as they arrive.

      • Currently free for all users to share their data up to a 2GB limit.
      • Data are freely available to the general public.
