The Afrobarometer project was designed to assess attitudes
toward democracy, markets, and civil society in several sub-Saharan
African nations, and to track the evolution of such attitudes in those
nations over time. This particular survey was concerned with the
attitudes and opinions of the citizens of South Africa. Respondents
gave their opinions of the performance of South Africa's President
Thabo Mbeki and elected officials in local and national government, the
government's handling of issues such as crime and the economy, the
most important issues facing the nation, and whether the country was
heading in the right direction. A series of questions addressed
respondents' living conditions, the economic conditions and political
influence of their own ethnic group compared to other groups in the
country, and whether they felt more attached to their national
identity or their ethnic group. Views were sought on the past,
present, and future of economic conditions in the country, economic
policies and reform, political parties, income inequality, civil
rights, equal rights for women, and whether laws were enforced
equally. Respondents rated their level of trust in the government,
military, courts, the media, and others, the level of corruption
existing in these groups, the ease of obtaining assistance with
securing documents and government services, the methods by which
respondents did so, and how often in the past year respondents had
paid a bribe to a government official. Other questions asked about
respondents' interest in public affairs, their level of civic
engagement, and their satisfaction with the way democracy and
elections worked in South Africa. Respondents were quizzed on their
knowledge of government officials, presidential term limits, and
government policy, and gave their interpretation of the concept of
democracy. Additional questions asked about media sources of
information, respondents' ownership of consumer goods such as books
and automobiles, their physical and mental health status, and whether
any close friends or relatives had died of AIDS. Information was also
collected on the presence of institutions, public utilities, and
soliders in the area. Demographic variables include sex, age, race,
ethnicity, education level, language, employment status, occupation,
voter registration status and participation history, political party
affiliation, religious preference, religious participation, and type
of residential area (e.g., urban, rural, etc.).

The Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) is an academic institution hosted by Vanderbilt University that began with the study of democratic values in Costa Rica, but today carries out surveys in much of Latin America, Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean. In 2004, LAPOP established the AmericasBarometer as multi-country, regularly conducted survey of democratic values and behaviors in the Americas, and the first round included voting-age respondents from 11 countries. The 2014 round, which marks the latest round of surveys of the AmericasBarometer, includes surveys conducted in 28 countries across the Americas and more than 50,000 interviews.
LAPOP collected opinions on major problems facing the country and community, threats to security, attitudes towards the country's political system, and trust in government institutions. Also measured were respondents' participation in community organizations, attitudes towards government critics, voting behavior, confidence in local government, and the prevalence of crime. Demographic information collected includes nationality, ethnicity, native language, age, gender, education level, occupation, religion, and whether the respondent lives in an urban or rural area.

This project consists of secondary analysis material (syntax only, no data). The original study that the material pertains to examines two distinct but related types of corporate crime prevention and control mechanisms--one that rests on firm governance (specifically, the Board of Directors) and the other on formal legal interventions. Specifically, the study examines whether (ceteris paribus) firms with more gender diversity on their boards are less involved in offending than firms whose boards are less diverse and whether changes in board diversity over time affect firm offending patterns. Of additional interest is how firms respond to legal discovery and punishment.
Do they change their governance structures (i.e., become more diverse) due to formal legal discovery?
Are firms generally deterred from reoffending (recidivism) when discovered or does deterrence depend on the government's response to offenders?
In particular, are certain regimes (criminal, civil, or regulatory) more successful at crime control than others?
Relevant data are collected from a variety of secondary sources, including corporate financial, statistical, and governance information. These data are then linked to cases of corporate offending (accounting fraud, bribery, environmental and anti-competitive) for 3,327 US based companies between 1996 and 2013.

The 2014 Survey of State Attorneys General (SAG) collected information on jurisdiction, sources and circumstances of case referrals, and the participation of attorneys general offices in federal or state white-collar crime task forces in 2014. White-collar crime was defined by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) as: "any violation of law committed through non-violent means, involving lies, omissions, deceit, misrepresentation, or violation of a position of trust, by an individual or organization for personal or organizational benefit." SAG sought to analyze how attorneys general offices as an organization in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories respond to white-collar offenses in their jurisdiction.
BJS asked respondents to focus on the following criminal and civil offenses: bank fraud, consumer fraud, insurance fraud, medical fraud, securities fraud, tax fraud, environmental offenses, false claims and statements, illegal payments to governmental officials (giving or receiving), unfair trade practices, and workplace-related offenses (e.g., unsafe working conditions). Variables included whether or not offices handled criminal or civil cases in the above categories, estimated number of cases in each category, and what types of criminal or civil sanctions were imposed on white-collar offenders. Researchers also assessed collaboration with partners outside of state attorneys offices, whether cases were referred for federal or local prosecution, and what circumstances lead to referring cases to state regulatory agencies. The extent to which state attorneys offices maintain white-collar crime data was also recorded.
